Re: BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery

Stephen Bishop’s Mr and Mrs Roberts made it to the shortlist because of the mellifluous arguments of a distinguished painter (Franck Auerbach) on the jury. And how right he was. Seen in the exhibition, it is a strong and moving image: a newlywed couple, c 1930, painted from an early photograph, and unexpectedly touching.
