Exhibition Eype Centre for the Arts - 23 May to 7 June 2026
Stephen Bishop’s paintings are often associated with the Dorset coast where he lives and works.
He is preoccupied with transformation and a yearning for the divine. Stephen stated, “I paint to find myself.”
Working predominantly with impasto oils and a rich palette. He often mixes oil and water mediums using unconventional techniques. His paintings oscillate in the fertile liminal space between abstraction and representation. His work exemplifies a visceral emotive response to the sea and landscape.
His painting ‘Mr & Mrs Roberts’ was championed by Frank Auerbach who selected it for the National Portrait Gallery Open.
Stephen is a regular artist in residence on Tresco, on the Isles of Scilly.
Stephen will be donating the painting "Captivated' to the the auction on 25 July, in support of the Woodlands of Tresco. Which were devasted by storm damage earlier this year. More details via Gallery Tresco.
His current work is inspired by his daily sea swim routine, drawings exploring Northern Soul and ancient neolithic sites of Wessex.
He is currently preparing for his exhibition at Eype Centre for the Arts in West Dorset as part of Dorset Art Weeks 2026. Venue no. 186 on page 99 of the guide.
